If you've never seen ArcFS in use before, you're lying,
because we use it to compact New Dawn, and as you've
probably noticed, it does make loading very slow. The
advantage is of course that you can run programs as if
they were not actually compacted (unlike Packdir or
Spark).
A wide range of compaction methods are available from
crunching to compressing, and you can also select the
number of bits to comapct with.
ArcFS does have some minor bugs in it that sometimes
leads to knackered archives or sometimes a complete crash.
Although the program does work like a real filing system,
is does lead to problems if you do a lot of messing about
with files in an archive.
The program also comes with a PD read only version (its
on this disk) so that you can distribute compacted stuff
to none owners of the full program.
The Read/Write version is available from David Pilling
for £5.95 and on the whole is a good buy. For users
wanting to back up there hard drives by compacting stuff
with ArcFS and then saving to floppies, this isn't a good
